Search Greenville County Court Records

Greenville County Court records in South Carolina are spread across Circuit Court, Family Court, Probate Court, Magistrate Court, Municipal Court, the Sheriff, and several state systems. A Greenville County Court case search usually starts with the county public index, but civil images, criminal documents, traffic tickets, warrants, jail records, marriage licenses, and divorce files each follow different routes. Greenville County Court access works best when the search starts with the court or agency that owns the record type.

Greenville County Court System

Greenville County is part of South Carolina's unified judicial system. The primary trial court for major civil and criminal matters is Circuit Court. In Greenville County, Circuit Court is in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit and has two major sides: Court of Common Pleas for civil cases and Court of General Sessions for criminal cases. Family Court, Probate Court, Magistrate Court, Municipal Court, Master-in-Equity Court, and Treatment Court also matter for record access.

Many searches fail because the wrong court is checked first. A felony case may move from a magistrate-issued warrant to General Sessions. A city traffic ticket may stay with the City of Greenville Municipal Court. A divorce is a Family Court record, while a marriage license is handled by Probate Court.

Typical case flow: Magistrate or Municipal Court › Circuit Court when the case type requires it › South Carolina Court of Appeals › South Carolina Supreme Court.

Greenville County Court Record Types

Greenville County court records include civil lawsuits, General Sessions criminal cases, family cases, probate files, traffic citations, lower-court matters, docket entries, and copy requests. Civil Common Pleas files may include online images. Criminal General Sessions files need closer handling because the online record may identify the case while the Clerk provides requested documents.

  • Civil court records: Common Pleas lawsuits, judgments, foreclosures, liens, orders, and motions.
  • Criminal court records: General Sessions charges, pleas, dispositions, sentences, and related docket activity.
  • Family records: divorce, custody, support, domestic, adoption, and juvenile matters with access limits.
  • Probate records: estates, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, and marriage license records.
  • Traffic records: Magistrate or Municipal Court tickets, court dates, payments, pleas, and dispositions.

Greenville County Family Court is separate from the main Circuit courthouse for current domestic and juvenile matters.

Family Court records can include public divorce information, but adoption and juvenile records require much stricter access rules.

What Greenville County Court Records Show

A Greenville County court record may show the case number, warrant number, indictment number, court agency, case type, filed date, status, caption, parties, docket entries, hearing activity, motions, orders, disposition, sentence, judgment, bond, fines, and copy fees. Not every record shows every field, and some details are redacted or held outside the public index.

Greenville County Court Access Laws

South Carolina starts from a broad public-records rule, but court records are not all treated the same. South Carolina Freedom of Information Act access applies to public bodies unless an exemption or another law closes the record. Court sealing and redaction rules also shape what appears online and what must be requested in person.

Key rules:

Rule 41.1, SCRCP recognizes open court records but requires a supported court order to seal them.

Rule 41.2, SCRCP requires filers to limit personal identifying information in court filings.

Rule 610, SCACR restricts bulk or compiled judicial data access.

The South Carolina FOIA statute is the broad public-records source for Greenville County records held by public offices.

FOIA can be a fallback for some county records, but it does not override juvenile, adoption, sealed-case, or court-specific limits.

Greenville County Jail Records

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office is at 4 McGee Street, and the Greenville County Detention Center is at 20 McGee Street. The county inmate search is a jail-custody tool, not a full criminal-history search. It can help identify current custody, charges, warrant or ticket numbers, bond, sentence, holds, and related agency information when available.

State prison custody is separate. SCDC covers people sentenced to state prison, VINE provides custody and case notifications, SLED handles South Carolina criminal-history and sex-offender registry channels, and BOP covers federal inmates. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office iOS app exists as an official mobile channel, but the research did not find a visible app-only inmate or warrant lookup feature.

The county inmate search disclaimer warns that jail information changes quickly and that arrest does not mean conviction.

That warning matters when a jail record is being compared with a later court disposition or criminal sentence.

Greenville County Warrant Checks

No official public online active-warrant search was found for Greenville County. The practical warrant channels are Sheriff's Warrant Services, the issuing court, public-records requests, FOIA, and court dockets. Warrant Services receives active warrants and maintains original warrants for service. The office phone is 864.467.5241, and time-sensitive wanted-subject information after hours goes to dispatch at 864.271.5210 option 8 or to 911 in an emergency.

Bench warrants may come from General Sessions, Common Pleas, Family Court, Magistrate Court, Drug Court, Probate Court, or Municipal Court. A missed city court date may not be solved by checking Circuit Court alone. The Solicitor's active General Sessions docket can show warrant number, indictment number, defendant, and date of arrest.

Greenville County Marriage and Probate

Greenville County Probate Court handles marriage licenses, estate files, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, protective proceedings, and probate records. Marriage applications use a Probate Court process, include residency-based fees, and have a 24-hour waiting period after filing. The license is valid only for a South Carolina ceremony and does not expire.

Divorce is different. Greenville County divorce records are Family Court records, and the county has a date split: Family Court records from 1925 through April 1996 are at the Clerk's Circuit Court Office, while later records route through Family Court. DPH can provide certain certified reports for date windows, but the decree comes from the county court file.

The Probate Court page lists the divisions and public-access links for Greenville County probate and marriage records.

Greenville County probate court records and marriage licenses

Probate Court is separate from the Clerk of Court, so estate and marriage-license requests should start at County Square.

Greenville County Court Fees

Copy fees depend on the office and record type. The Clerk's copy schedule is different from Probate Court's estate and marriage schedules, and law-enforcement records have their own Public Records fees. Certified copies must come from the issuing office, not from a search result or a third-party screen.

ItemAmount or Rule
Clerk plain copies or printouts$0.25 per page
Clerk certified or sealed copy$10 per document
General Sessions research or redaction over 15 minutes$18 per hour, prorated in 15-minute increments
Probate original will filing$10
Marriage license, Greenville County resident$50
Public Records local background check, five years$5

Federal Court in Greenville County

Federal court records are not Greenville County court records. The Carroll A. Campbell Jr. U.S. Courthouse is at 250 East North Street, close to the county courthouse, but it belongs to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Federal cases are searched through PACER or federal court channels, and federal inmates are searched through the Bureau of Prisons.

The Greenville federal courthouse page identifies the local federal courthouse and federal Clerk contact.

Restricted Greenville County Records

Greenville County Clerk materials are generally available for public viewing, copying, and printing, but the Clerk identifies important exceptions. Dismissed warrants, sealed cases, juvenile cases, adoption filings, and filings closed by law are not ordinary public copies. Mental-health and involuntary-commitment records also follow separate Probate Court release rules.

South Carolina juvenile and adoption statutes provide strong confidentiality rules. Sealing is a court process under Rule 41.1, while expungement for eligible criminal records is handled through the solicitor's office under South Carolina expungement law. The Clerk does not remove a public record just because a party asks informally.

Note: The Public Index stopped displaying home addresses for new and existing cases on January 1, 2026.

Greenville County Court History

Greenville's court-record history reaches back to the county's early downtown courthouse and records building. County historical records identify a Robert Mills-designed courthouse or records building constructed in Palladian style between 1822 and 1823. After a new courthouse was built across the street in 1855, the older building became the county records building and was later demolished in 1924.

The county's Historical Records Search includes Common Pleas, General Sessions, Probate Court, Register of Deeds, Sheriff's Office, and Council Commissioner collections. That makes the historical portal useful for older Greenville County court research when a modern case search does not reach far enough.

Modern Greenville County records now sit in a multi-building system that reflects those older splits. Circuit Court remains downtown at East North Street, Family Court is on Halton Road, Probate Court is at County Square, and the Law Enforcement Center and Detention Center are on McGee Street. Historical court research may begin with the county's online historical collections, while current certified copies still come from the office that owns the active record.

Greenville County Court FAQs

Where should a Greenville County court records search start?

Start with the Greenville County Public Index for Circuit and Magistrate records. If the matter is municipal, probate, family, jail, warrant, or federal, use the specific office or system that owns that record.

Can General Sessions criminal documents be downloaded online?

The Clerk states that General Sessions online records show file information only. Criminal document copies require a request to Criminal Records with the arrest warrant number or indictment number.

Who schedules General Sessions court dates?

The Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor schedules General Sessions criminal court dates. The Clerk maintains records, but the Solicitor controls that active criminal docket schedule.

Is there a Greenville County active warrant database?

No official public online active-warrant lookup was found in the research. Warrant Services, issuing courts, Public Records, FOIA, and court dockets are the documented channels.

Where are Greenville County traffic tickets searched?

Traffic tickets are split by issuing agency and court. Sheriff or South Carolina Highway Patrol citations may route through Greenville County Magistrate Court, while city tickets are handled by the municipal court that issued the citation. SCDMV driver records are a separate license and points record.

Can a search result be used as a certified copy?

No. A search result can identify the case, party, docket, or file location, but certified copies must come from the Clerk, Probate Court, Family Court, Municipal Court, or other issuing office. Fees and copy rules depend on that office.
